Šibenik-Knin county

Šibenik - Knin county covers an area of 2,939 km². Its territory is divided into two parts by the deep canyon of the rivers Krka and Čikola on one side and the lake Prokljansko jezero and the Šibenik channel on the other side. At the same time the Krka River is the connection that has always integrated a part of the northern and a part of the central Dalmatia in a separate unit - the area of Šibenik. The coast is well-indented with many bays and marinas and over 240 islands, islets and reefs among which the most numerous and the most beautiful one is the Kornati archipelago.
The city of Šibenik is the centre of the county with the population of 42,000. Šibenik has a unique position on the slopes of hills located on the northern side of a large and colourful bay at the mouth of the Krka River, which is connected to the sea by the St. Ana’s channel. The name Šibenik was mentioned for the first time in the charter of king Petar Krešimir IV in 1066; that is the reason why today Šibenik is called Krešimir’s city. Šibenik was founded by the Croats and it is considered to be the oldest autochthonous Croatian town on the eastern part of the Adriatic coast.
Two national parks: Krka River and Kornati archipelago are situated in this county, which makes it particularly attractive for tourism development. Nautical tourism has developed intensively due to the indented coast of this area, especially in the national park Kornati. Therefore, county has nine marinas today.
