Historically the heart of the island of Hvar, the antique Faros (Stari Grad today) was built where the deep bay meets the fertile field of the island, the Arcadian valley planted with vineyards and olive trees.
Surrounded with pine-woods, cooled by summer breeze, Stari Grad is one of the rare Dalmatian towns where the air is refreshing and the sleep is invigorating during hot summer days.
Due to its central position, Stari Grad is an ideal departure point for long walks or excursions around the sunniest and the most scented Adriatic island.
Several thousands of years old history of continuous living has left many monumental traces in the urban part of town. City walls made by the Greek colonizers in the 4th century B.C., Roman mosaics, the early Christian St. John's church, the medieval street system and, above all, Tvrdalj, a Renaissance fortified palace with a fish-pond and a garden, that used to belong to the famous writer Petar Hektorović, are guidelines through the millennium existence of this town.
While walking around the old town centre, through narrow streets and small squares, you can listen to the whisper of bygone times.
